I have received my Level 3 Forest School Certification. Forest School is an outdoor, child-centred educational approach rooted in Scandinavian and UK traditions. It emphasizes regular, long-term experiences in natural settings to foster holistic development—building confidence, independence, and resilience through play and exploration. Inspired by Denmark’s friluftsliv (“open-air living” or “fresh air culture”), Forest School celebrates nature as both classroom and teacher, encouraging learners to connect deeply with the environment while developing practical and social skills.
The photographs below were taken at the Forest School sessions I facilitated as part of the requirements for receiving my certification. Learners participated in many activities of their choosing to include making wood cookie name badges, nature journalling, flora and fauna identification, tree planting, fire starting, building a “bug hotel”, and learning practical life skills while learning the safe handling of tools such as bow saws, axes, knives, and loppers. Our sessions emphasised the seven Leave No Trace principles.
